I've only got two, and that is enough.

The first one, my grandpa gave me in the mid-90s. He got it somewhere in Switzerland in 1973. It wasn't working. I had it serviced for $500. Washed it in the laundry and broke the chrono seconds hand, and had to do it again. (ouch) But it's handsome and rare. It's hand-wound, and not too big. I love it.

The other one, my grandpa got for my dad on his first trip to Switzerland in 1971. He was always a auto racing fan, and a chronograph was THE thing to have, in those days. Dad wore it almost every day for 20 years, until it was gaining several minutes per day. He inquired about how much to get it serviced, and was quoted $500. The guy offered him $500 for it as-is. He said "No thanks." and put it in his drawer, and replaced it with a $20 Casio analog quartz. Sad

When he turned 65, my brother sister and I chipped in and had it serviced. He wore it for awhile, then we stopped seeing it. When I asked about it, he was evasive. Then, I found it months later in a pile of junk in his house, in rough shape. One of his stupid dogs had gotten ahold of it. I got a quote to get it fixed (now 15 years later) Cost? $1,000. Ouch. That one is still waiting for me to find a decent enough watchmaker that I trust with it. Parts are rare and expensive, since the vintage Rolexe and Breitling chronos use them too. These lesser brands using that same Valjoux 72 tend to get sacrificed to keep the Rollies and Breitlings going. I'm on the fence about getting this one fixed again. On one hand, it would bring back happy childhood memories. On the other, it makes me mad to look at it now, thinking of all the money I've sunk into it just for him to neglect it.

I feel like my collection is "missing" a Valjoux 7750, but then I remember the cost of service... A new movement costs the same as having one serviced!
