So how did the Astron work?

It was too early for integrated circuits. Did they wire up a string of flip flops out of discrete components? They had to divide the 8.192 kHz signal down to one pulse per second.

Making a quartz crystal into the shape of a tuning fork was clever. Obvious in hindsight. But not obvious really.

I see the Astron had shock protected jewels...... amazing.
